Single-seal and modular expansion joints B2W

B2W expansion joints are intended to be used in bridges of every category of the traffic (including KR7 according to Polish specification) and every type of bridge structures (road, railway and for pedestrians). They ensure a long-term durability no matter of intensity of exploitation. The expansion joints are watertight, tailored for particular geometry of the bridge as well as for the client’s requirements. They might be installed in a fast and easy manner.

Construction

The B2W expansion joints consist of steel profiles, angle bars, gusset plates and the anchoring loops. Between the edge beams the watertight elastomeric sealant is mounted by aluminum compression profiles.

In case of B2W modular expansion joints, the intermediate beams are supported by scissor-type mechanisms, which are also responsible for providing uniform distances between the beams.

The shape of the expansion joints is precisely adjusted to the geometry of the cross-section of the bridge. The length of one expansion joint might achieve up to 30 meters. On client’s request, one expansion joint might be technologically divided into shorter parts and prepared for further welding on site, which might be necessary for replacement of old expansion joint or where the length of expansion joint exceeds the limits. This operation is recommended especially for single-seal expansion joints.

Movements

B2W expansion joints are divided into two variants: single-seal (1S) and modular (2S-9S).

Each module might compensate the following movements:

  • ±40 mm – type 80,
  • ±50 mm – type 100, equipped with noise-reduction plates,
  • ±75 mm – type 150, equipped with protective plate.

Durability

The expansion joints are tested for dynamic resistance which proves the durability while being subjected to the recurring loads. The expansion joints manufactured by B2 fulfill the requirements of Road and Bridge Research Institute, which are more severe that those stated in ETAG 032 (parts 4, 6 and 8). The durability of B2 expansion joints might be assumed for 50 years. Therefore they meet the Polish requirement for ability to service for at least 20 years.

Intended use

The B2 expansion joints (type 80 and type 100) are intended for use in traffic engineering:

  • in bridges with a steel, composite reinforced-concrete or prestressed structure
  • on roads of any traffic load category
  • in bridge structures located in regions of mining damage

The B2 expansion joints (type 150 with a noise-reduction plates) are intended for use in traffic engineering:

  • in railway or tram bridge structures and in structures intended solely for pedestrian and bicycle traffic
Range of movements

B2W type 80: from ±40 to ±360 mm

B2W type 100: from ±50 to ±450 mm

B2W type 150: from ±75 to ±675 mm

Accessories

The B2W expansion joints type 100 are equipped with noise-reduction plates which are installed in the area of road traffic and which are made of non-alloy steel or stainless steel. The B2W expansion joints type 150 are equipped with plates which provide protection against intake of crushed stone.

On client’s request the B2W expansion joints might be equipped with sealants with draining tubes which provides dewatering. In this case water is removed from the sealant through the connector to the drainage system.

NOTE: the sealants with draining tubes require regular inspections, service and cleaning. The obstructions might lead to retention of water in the sealant and to expiration of manufacturer’s warranty.

Additionally, the expansion joint might be equipped with a membrane which reduces the noise. This membrane is installed underneath the expansion joint and reduces the propagation of noise which is a result of transition of the vehicles.

It is also possible to protect the gaps in the pedestrian and cornice areas by using cover plates, made from steel of aluminum. We offer also additional stay-in-place formworks fixed to angle bars which makes pouring of concrete into the recess much easier.

Documents

Modular expansion joints manufactured by B2 have the following documents issued:

  • National Certificates of Constancy of Performance no. 052 – UWB – 044/1 and 052 – UWB – 045/1,
  • National Technical Assessments IBDiM-KOT-2018/0219 and IBDiM-KOT-2018/0225, issued by Road and Bridge Research Institute.

According to Polish regulation, these construction products are marked with a polish construction mark (B) and the manufacturer issues National Declaration of Performance which are delivered to the customer at the latest with the delivery.
